7 Factors to Consider When Choosing Winter Bedding

Sleep-related problems affect 50 to 70 million people in the United States. Whether you are too hot or too cold while you sleep, having the right bedding can make a difference.

Weather in the winter months can make it especially difficult to sleep comfortably, so you must choose the best covers and sheets for your seasonal bedding. Do you want help choosing winter bedding?

Keep reading this article for 7 factors to consider when you are choosing new winter bedding.

1. Choose Your Filling Material

One of the first things you need to consider when you are getting new winter bedding is what material your duvet or comforter is filled with. One great option for cold months is a down comforter. While it is an effective and natural barrier to cold, down is also quite expensive.

Another common filling material is cotton. However, this is not ideal for the winter months, as it is a cooler material and is a better option for warmer months in the summer.

To make sure you stay warm, you should find a comforter or duvet that has good heat retention properties. However, you want to make sure you consider the differences between breathable and warm.

2. Cost

Next, it is important to consider your winter bedding budget. While you may prefer a material like down for your comforter, it simply may not fit in your budget.

Several things will factor into the cost of your bedding. These include the size of your bed, the materials you use, and even the type of blanket.

For example, a thick quilt will likely cost more than a lightweight duvet or comforter. Make sure you set a budget before you shop for your new bedding.

3. High Tog Duvet Cover

Something else you should consider when buying seasonal bedding is the tog rating. A TOG rating essentially tells you how much warmth something provides, whether this is a blanket, sleeping bags, or even clothes for your baby.

TOG is also known as Thermal Overall Grade. The higher your rating, the warmer your blanket will be.

For example, higher TOG ratings will have an increased ability to trap warm air. In the warm months, you will want a TOG rating of 10 or more.

Not only do you need to understand the TOG rating of your winter blankets, but you should also understand your body's natural thermal regulation.

4. Layer Your Bedding

Another important tip to follow is to layer your bedding. By having several different layers, you will have more pockets of warm air that will keep your bed even warmer.

For example, you may want to have sheets, your comforter, throw blankets, and more.

Having more layers of bedding will make you warmer without making you too hot while you sleep. Plus, if you get too hot during the night, you can always remove a single layer, rather than taking off your entire blanket.

If you do not want to buy more than one blanket for your bed, you can also consider layering extra sheets. This is a trick used by many hotels where they will have a base layer of sheets, a blanket, and then add another layer of sheets on top of this blanket.

Because sheets are not as heavy as blankets, you will find that you get the same warmth while still having breathable materials.

5. Consider Natural Fabrics

You may also want to consider buying sheets and blankets that are made from natural fibers, like cotton or bamboo sheets and duvets

Because these materials are more breathable than the other synthetic materials used for bedding they will help regulate your body temperature better and will keep you warmer in the winter.

They are also softer and more comfortable to sleep on, as they are gentle on the skin. Natural fabrics like bamboo are also a more sustainable choice. When you buy these, you're doing your part to help the environment!

Finally, natural fabrics are great for those with allergies, as they are hypoallergenic and will help you sleep healthier and more comfortably.

6. Choose the Right Size

When you are shopping for new blankets, it is also important that you choose the right size. While most companies offer universal sizing, you may want to measure your mattress before you shop.

Usually, you want a blanket that will come over the sides of your bed and will have a few extra inches on both sides.

7. Consider a Heated Blanket

Finally, if you are still not able to stay warm during the cold winter months, you may want to consider getting an electric blanket. While you could also get a space heater, a heated blanket will be most effective to warm you while you sleep.

Heated blankets need to be plugged in and they disperse the heat through wires that are built into the blanket. They don't cost much to run, so you may want to buy one of these to stay extra cozy!
