8 Things to Look for When Choosing Children's Bedding

8 Things to Look for When Choosing Children's Bedding

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, sleep deprivation is a serious concern for youth. Preschoolers require between 10-13 hours of sleep every 24 hours, children 6-12 years need 9-12 hours, and between 13-18 years of age 8-10 hours.

Children who receive sufficient sleep have better mental health, a healthier immune system, better memory, better behavior, and better school performance.

One key element to your child’s sleep cycle is choosing quality children’s bedding. You need a product that can withstand messy accidents and has a relaxing, soothing feel. Comfortable, breathable sheets and pillows will send them into slumberland quickly.

Selecting the Best Children’s Bedding

As a parent, you want to provide your child with quality bedding that is non-allergenic. Your child is more concerned with the way it looks. Children have specific tastes, and you need to take that into consideration.

1. Style Preference

Kids of all ages like splashes of color, which is easy to incorporate into an attractive color scheme that grows with the child. They also have taste preferences that fall into four categories.

Young children often want a theme for their bedroom, such as unicorns, western, or a favorite action figure or cartoon character.

Some children prefer clean, modern lines with very little clutter. They tend to like bright/primary colors and patterns, such as bold stripes.

The third type is classic styling. These kids prefer soft colors and traditional patterns like floral prints, paisley, and gingham.

Then there are the eclectic kids, those who want a little bit of everything. They may select a pattern from the classics, colors from the modern, and mix into it something from the theme category.

Kids who have a say in the selection of their bedding will enjoy using their bedroom for its main purpose—sleep!

2. Working with a Theme

Bedding that is themed for a character can be overpowering and expensive. This is especially true if the child outgrows their taste for that theme quickly. The most economical solution is to select bedding that matches the colors of the theme but will grow with the child as their taste changes.

To fulfill their desire for a theme bedroom, bring in posters, stuffed animals, or throw pillows that feature the character of choice. Those items are inexpensive and can be rotated out and the new theme brought in without affecting the bedding.

3. Sheets and Duvets

Sheets with a soft, comforting feel will allow your child to rest peacefully. Look for cotton fabric with a high-thread-count. Children move around a lot and you want a quality product that will not wear out quickly.

Nest Bedding offers a collection of children’s bedding essentials, that include sheets in 24 Crayola™ crayon colors. The sheets are made from 100% super-soft brushed polyester microfiber. There are sure to be several colors that catch your child’s eye.

Duvets make it easy for your child to learn to make their bed. However, changing the bed is more time consuming because of your need to work the comforter into the duvet. A sheet and comforter is a faster, less tiring option.

4. Comforters and Blankets

Using a comforter is fast and less tiring when changing bed linens.  A child-friendly option is a washable wool comforter that is soft and lightweight. If the hand wash line dry care requirements of the wool are not to your liking, we suggest taking a look at Nest Bedding’s cotton comforter.

The cotton comforter is filled with soft cotton and is lightweight and comfortable to sleep under. The easy-care process of machine wash and dry makes it an ideal choice for children.

5.  Washable

Kids by nature get things dirty, and bedding is no exception. Bedsheets, bedspreads or comforters, and blankets must all be machine washable. Due to frequent washing, make sure you purchase quality bed linens that are long-lasting.

To keep your child comfortable in their bed, you want to reduce the chance of textile dermatitis. That occurs when the child’s skin reacts to the fibers in fabrics against their skin, including dyes, resins, or other chemicals.

That is why the hypoallergenic and breathable bedding products from Nest Bedding are an excellent choice for your child's bed.

6. Waterproof  Mattress and Pillow Protectors

Bedwetting is a common problem in children, so a waterproof mattress protector is always a good idea. Even if they are beyond the bedwetting stage, your older child may take a snack or drink into the bedroom that can end up spilling on the bedding. Liquids that work their way down into the mattress can cause unseen mold.

In addition to protecting the mattress from liquid accidents, a mattress protector prevents debris, dirt, and dust from getting into your mattress. The average mattress has between 10,000 to 10 million dust mites—yuk!

A hypoallergenic mattress pad works as a barrier between the mattress and your child. This protects your child from experiencing an allergic reaction.

The wool and cotton waterproof mattress protector by Nest Bedding will keep your child’s bedding fresh and clean, extending its life. The protector not only protects the bedding, it keeps the mattress cool, helping your child’s body reach and stay at an ideal sleeping temperature.

This eco-friendly mattress protector is ideal for anyone with allergies to down or polyester. It also offers protection for those allergic to mold, mildew, and dust mites.

The mattress cover is machine washable and comes with a 10-year warranty. We also recommend the waterproof pillow protector. This breathable pillow protector prevents liquids from soaking the pillow. The waterproof barrier is free of fire retardants, antimicrobial treatments, has no chemical emissions, no allergenic materials, and is latex, phthalate, and vinyl/PVC free.

The pillow protector is ideal for your child’s bedding. Completely machine washable and dryable, it is easy to keep it clean and fresh for your child’s pillow.

7. Easy Breather Pillow

The Adjustable Easy Breather Pillow has a soft, breathable cover and is filled with supportive foam fill. The ability to unzip and remove some of the fill allows you to adjust this pillow to fit your child’s comfort level and size.

Save the fill you remove in a bag. You can then add it back in later as your child grows and they need a thicker pillow.

8. Quality Mattress

With everything from crib to adult size mattresses, Nest Bedding can fill the needs of your entire family. The Big Kid’s Bed mattress is perfect for a child's first mattress or bunk beds.
